Preparing your garden and external areas for winter 

  • Check roofing for loose or cracked tiles
  • Secure garden furniture so they can withstand possible strong winds 
  • Empty water features to prevent cracked pipes during frozen temperatures 
  • Attend to any loose tree branches that are close to the home 
  • Cover and store electrical garden items such as lawn mowers to prevent water/frost damage and rust

Preparing inside your home for winter  

  • Do you live in an area at risk of flooding? If so, it is worth considering raising the height of your sockets to avoid possible danger and water damage flooding may cause
  • Consider storing valuables and important documents in a safe and waterproof container 
  • Ensure your loft is insulated to keep your home warm 
  • Check for any leaky taps – these can freeze and block the pipes when cold weather arrives.
  • Burst pipe detectors can be life-savers in the event of a frozen-then-burst pipe. Check out Water Hero’s range of devices. 
  • Have an emergency flood kit. Some items to include would be a broom, spade, mop and bucket; domestic detergent and disinfectant; rubber boots, gloves and protective clothing; waterproof torch and radio; bottled water for drinking.
  • Consider installing leak detectors, such as these. They detect the leak and switch off the water supply before it causes damage to your home.
